The shooting community is, by nature, very helpful, with almost everyone keen to pass on nuggets of wisdom. You’ll often hear:
“you’re behind…” - “give it more lead…”
“you missed in front…” - “keep the gun moving…”
“dead gun mate..." - "try swinging through…”
All very helpful…or is it?
The helpful soul may have called it correctly. But the real question is; why were you in front? Why were you behind? The remedy is what eludes most kind-hearted folk.
While everyone is a budding shooting coach, some caution is needed.
Quite often, a once progressing shooter will see their scores go backward as they absorb the well meant intentions and words of wisdom from fellow shooters. The result; the shooter ultimately doesn’t understand ‘why’ they missed, or how to fix it...
Frustration and doubt soon follows.
Pick an instructor who specialises in the area you want to focus.
If sporting is your thing or something you’re interested in, then choose an instructor who specialises and excels at that discipline. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Above all, pick someone you connect with.
Matt has tutored with world champions along the way, but just because they shoot well, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a good ‘people person’ or indeed a good instructor.
The point, not all great shooters are destined to be instructors.
What you’re looking for is someone capable of identifying faults and communicating the desired fix in a simple and effective way.
The old saying ‘people buy people’ is so true. If you’re going to spend some time in close proximity with a coach, you don’t want to smell cigarette breath, or stale coffee when he or she is leaning in!
Choose your discipline, then choose your instructor. If skeet is your thing, and you want to shoot it more consistently, then Matt, the Skeet Coach, is your man! His passion, love for skeet and people skills are evident from the moment you meet.
